THE STORY OF THE WIPER BLADE
Every wiper blade on the road today follows an idea that Mary Anderson sketched in 1903. Here is her story, in short.

Mary Anderson was born on 19 February 1866 in Greene County, Alabama, USA.
On a trip to New York City, she watched a streetcar driver stop the car and step out to wipe snow and sleet off the front window by hand.
Back home in Birmingham, Alabama, she sketched a "Window Cleaning Device". A lever inside the vehicle moved a blade across the outside of the glass. She filed on 18 June 1903 and the patent was granted on 10 November 1903. She is credited with the first effective windshield wiper.
She tried to sell the patent, but the company that replied said it saw no commercial value in it. Few people owned cars then, and many believed a moving blade would distract drivers.
Her patent ran out in 1920.
Cadillac began building cars with windshield wipers as standard equipment in 1922, and the rest of the industry followed.
Mary Anderson passed away on 27 June 1953. In 2011 she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
FROM ALL OF US AT BRICADO
You saw a driver struggling to see the road and you did something about it. Over a century later, we still build for the same simple goal: a clear view and a safer drive. We are proud to carry that idea forward, and we thank you for it.
